Our Mission
Our mission is your mission: to clarify your obstacles towards wellbeing, and pave a path forward.
Coaching is a partnership. We work collaboratively with clients to overcome challenges, achieve goals, and otherwise optimize lives. Some challenges are readily apparent, while others reveal themselves over a process of inquiry and insights. We are motivated by our shared desire to help individuals align their lives with their values.
Thriving Doctors is composed of ICF Certified coaches Karen Shapiro & Steve Coxsey. We are dedicated to helping people understand themselves and realize their potential. Both married to doctors, we have particular insights into the challenges facing the medical community. We combine experience, expertise, and empathy to support our clients in embodying their most aspirational selves.

Karen Shapiro, JD, PCC (Professional Certified Coach), has devoted her life to helping people better understand themselves. A lawyer by training, Karen has since found purpose in using her keen analytical skills to help her clients set goals and reach them. Having made a significant career transition of her own, she is particularly aware of the challenges one faces on the way to making meaningful change.
Karen creates a safe space for her clients to discover the person they want to become, and offers empathetic, insightful help towards becoming that person. Her coaching style is gentle and warm, yet direct. She values family, friends, and personal growth. Helping people learn and move forward is her passion. She considers it part of her life work to read and learn about paths toward self-improvement, and to transfer what she’s learned onto others, so those around her may find more happiness and fulfillment.
When not supporting clients, you’ll find Karen practicing French or enjoying a long walk. She’s also a mother of two young adults and a dog lover.

Stephen Coxsey, MA, PCC (Professional Certified Coach) coaches leaders and self-leaders on professional development, personal growth, and change management through the lens of social emotional agility. He has worked with clients in large and small corporations, health care organizations, government agencies, academic institutions, professional practices, and small businesses.
Steve holds a masters degree in psychology and maintains a Professional Counseling license in Texas but has worked primarily as a coach since 2008. With a lifelong interest in psychology, he continues to study the latest findings from positive psychology, the science of how and why people thrive through their personal strengths; social psychology, including motivation and effective goal setting; and neuroscience, especially the processes that contribute to effective self-management and behavior change. He takes this research and derives practical applications to help his clients be more resilient with setbacks, more agile when navigating challenges, and ultimately more successful and satisfied with their careers and lives.
Steve is an experienced, knowledgeable, and intuitive coach. Experience as a psychotherapist taught him the complexity of human relationships and the challenges people face when significant change happens, whether they choose the change or circumstances impose it. He sees coaching as a process of thought partnership that supports the client in gaining clarity and identifying inner resources for motivation and resilience. In the near term this promotes performance and achievement. Over time it increases self-awareness and develops strengths and competencies which promote personal growth.
